About the Photo

The sun shines through trees during sunrise at Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve in Idaho. The twisted branches, common among trees in the preserve, is called witches broom, a condition caused by a variety of biological and environmental factors resulting in the abnormal formation of the branches. It's always fascinating to me how a location such as this one has something that makes it unique like the witches broom effect so each time I work on a story for Uncharted I like to take time to research those details and then when I'm out shooting I try to capture it visually. Ideally, the photos I shot for the story "For Lava Lovers" will give the reader a sense of what it's like to visit Craters of the Moon even before they visit it for themselves.
